Why Gambling and Casinos Won’t Make You Happy

6–10 minutes

It’s a common belief among many people that if they could just strike it rich or somehow get a million dollars, that they could truly be happy. After all, if you had a lot of money, you wouldn’t need to worry about finding work or paying your bills. Plus, you could do all the things that you’ve always wanted to try, like take vacations around the world.

While people dream of becoming a millionaire or striking it rich, many people realize that they’ll likely never earn that much money by working at their jobs. So, to try to make money quickly, many people will turn to gambling or playing games at a casino.

Many people may also become addicted to gambling. It’s often because, even if they lose, they truly believe that the next time they bet, that they could win big. It can be an endless cycle.

To many people, it may seem like a lot of fun. However, we can tell you with 100% certainty that gambling or playing games at casinos will not make you happy.

Why Gambling Won’t Make You Happy

There are many reasons why gambling or spending your time in casinos won’t make you truly happy:

1. The Odds Are Against You

We have all seen news stories about one person winning hundreds of millions of dollars in the lottery or winning a ton of money by picking the right team for the Super Bowl. It is always possible to win in these scenarios. However, it’s incredibly unlikely.

The odds of winning the lottery are about 1 in 292 million. The odds of winning one million dollars in almost any activity are still about 1 in 11 million. The point is that you’re not likely to win. You could spend years gambling and buying lottery tickets every day, and you could never win big.

The problem is that if you gamble all the time, you could win smaller sums of money. That’s by design. The casino wants you to win here and there so you keep gambling. But in the end, you’re likely to be disappointed.

Being disappointed all the time can lead to depression and ruin your chances of happiness.

2. Gambling Can Lead to Other Bad Behaviors

Many people who have a vice like gambling or spending a lot of time in casinos can often turn to other bad habits. For instance, many people who go to casinos often smoke and drink alcohol. Other people, who lose while gambling, may turn to drugs to cope with their sense of loss.

Once you fall into a hole of sin and debauchery, it can be too easy to pile on other bad habits. You won’t be happy with drugs, drinking, prescription meds, pornography, or other negative behaviors.

3. You’ll Lose Money

Even if you win some money from time to time, if you gamble all the time, you’re going to lose more money than you earn. That’s the whole point. Casinos and Sports Betting Books would go bankrupt if all they did was give money away. Even when it comes to sports, you can’t predict what will happen. The best team could be playing the worst team, and the QB could get hurt and the bad team wins.

If you don’t have a budget and you’re not smart with your finances, you will lose money. If you let gambling control your life, it’s very possible that you could land deep in debt. When you don’t have any money for the necessities, you will be unhappy.

4. You Can Lose Friends and Family

Gambling can get out of control quickly. Let it get out of hand, and you could hurt your relationships. Think about it. If you constantly spend time at the casino, you’ll be away from home where the people who love you are. Even if you spend more time at home but you bet money on sports gambling, all of your time could be spent being glued to the screen as you watch the games, and you could forget about your family.

There’s also the possibility that your gambling could lead to some of the other negative items on this list. You could go into debt and cause a rift in your family. You could turn to drugs or other addictive substances and ruin the relationship with your friends. No matter what happens, it won’t be good, and you could end up unhappy and alone.

5. Physical Health Issues

Being consumed with gambling and time in the casino can cause you to neglect the routines that your body needs to thrive, like time exercising and consuming a healthy diet. If you do spend time in the casino, you’ll have access to limited menus with unhealthy options. If you spend all of your time in front of the TV betting on and watching sports, you may spend more time eating snacks and less time consuming healthy meals.

There are other health issues that could occur as well. For instance, sitting bent over at a slot machine for hours can hurt your spine and legs. Failure to walk around could lead to weight gain and blood clots in your legs. If you’re nervous about winning, you could grind your teeth and have dental issues. There’s a lot that can go wrong.

6. Crime

Just like with other bad habits, gambling has the potential to lead to other negative experiences. Many people end up committing crime to support their addiction. If you’re not winning or using your winning funds wisely, you could run out of money. Where will you get more money?

Some people will be so desperate to place that next bet that they will go out and steal or find other illegal ways to make money. Thou Shalt Not Steal. It is one of the commandments for a reason. Not only is it wrong to take what someone else owns, it’s also bad for your mental health. If you’re stealing or committing crimes, you have to constantly look over your shoulder and you never know when you’ll get caught. It’s not a fun life to live.

So, you need to avoid the triggers that can lead to that type of behavior, and gambling needs to stop.

6. Gambling is Pointless Because God is in Control of Your Life

While some people gamble because they love the thrill or they love sports, most people gamble because they’re looking for an easy way to make a lot of money. It’s a nice idea to think that once you are rich, that your problems will go away. The reality is that they won’t. You’ll always have struggles in life, and that’s okay.

To that point, it doesn’t matter if you try to get rich. You actually don’t have control of your own life at all. God knows what will happen to you every day of your life. In fact, he knew about you before you were even conceived or born. He wants you to have a good life. God also wants you to have everything you need to survive. That’s why you may not be rich, but you’re always able to pay the bills (even though there may be some debt along the way), and you will always have food to eat.

There is always the chance to get rich. But let God take the wheel. He wants the best for you. Don’t gamble with your life. Put your faith in God and Jesus Christ, and you’ll enjoy your life knowing that you’ll always be okay.

Additional Ways to Quit Your Gambling Addiction

God is the ultimate answer when it comes to quitting an addiction like gambling because it’s a sin and he will help you to remove it from your life.

However, there are other ways to quit your gambling and casino addiction:

  • Find a supportive friend who you can turn to when you’re tempted to gamble.
  • Have someone else control your money.
  • Avoid the activity that triggers your gambling. That could mean avoiding sports or taking a  different route home so you don’t pass the casino.
  • Find other ways to spend your time with chores around the house or other ways to have fun.
