Quitting An Addiction to Stimulants With God’s Help

6–9 minutes

According to statistics from 2020, there are over 750,000 people who openly admit that they’re addicted to stimulants. Sadly, that includes children ages 12 and up into adulthood. As opposed to many other obvious drugs, like alcohol and marijuana, stimulants can often be harder to classify, which is likely why so many people are addicted. They may not even realize their dependency issues. However, if you or your child is addicted, you can help them quit stimulants with God’s help.

By seeking help from God through prayer, learning the lessons of the bible, and by realizing that you have a problem, you can quit an addiction to stimulants. In this guide, we’ll tell you more about the various types of stimulants and how your loving Heavenly Father can help you beat this dependency for good.

What are Stimulants?

The category of stimulants covers many different addictive substances. Basically, they are anything that gives you an unnatural boost. Many people use stimulants to feel “happy” or energized, but once the high dies down, the person often feels worse. Then, they try to get more stimulants to reclaim that feeling.

Many stimulants are drugs that aren’t illegal. They’re prescribed by a doctor. The problem is that the patient gets addicted. Two of the more common stimulants include adderall and ritalin. These are often prescribed to kids and adults who can’t pay attention at school or work. However, over time, people who take them can become dependent, even when they no longer have the “symptoms” that required them in the first place.

Common prescribed stimulant drugs include:

  • Ritalin
  • Adderall
  • Concerta
  • Dexedrine

There are also many stimulant drugs that are made only as a recreational drug. They include:

  • Cocaine
  • Bath salts
  • Methamphetamines

These are drugs that are bad news. They are highly addictive, and if you’re currently using them, you need God more than ever. By the way:

Many people ask, “what are bath salts?” They sound like something you put in the bath. However, they’re synthetic cathinones. Bath salts can be snorted, smoked, or taken orally, and they’re meant to mimic cocaine, ecstasy, and other deadly drugs.

How You Can Quit Stimulants with God’s Help

There are several ways that you can fight your addiction and quit stimulants with God’s help. Try some or each of these tactics, and you can beat this tough habit.

Turn to the Bible

For starters, God does not want you to be addicted to anything. He wants you to live a life similar to Jesus Christ. He was the God-man who never sinned. There are several verses throughout the bible that tell people what they should avoid if they want to be like Jesus and hope to find a place in heaven.

For instance:

Ephesians 5:3 – “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints.”

That means that you should avoid uncleanness. Taking drugs and stimulants is not keeping your body and soul clean. Since God doesn’t want you to be addicted, if you pray to him and trust in Jesus Christ, you can beat the addiction.

Jeremiah 30:17 – “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD.”

God wants you to be free from your sins and to beat this harmful addiction. If you turn to God, he will help you. It may not happen overnight, but he will hear your prayers. You really have a chance if you ask Jesus Christ to be your personal savior. He will be with you through the struggles, and you will see light on the other side.

Isaiah 40:29 – “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”

Once you’re addicted to stimulants or any type of drug, you may feel like there is no way out. You may believe that you don’t have the strength to quit your addictions. It may seem easier to keep doing drugs. However, if you turn to God, he will give you the strength to beat your dependencies. He will increase your strength so that you can get the willpower to quit.

Psalm 103:2-4 – “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities: who healeth all thy diseases.”

You’ve heard it said before that addiction is a disease. God can help you to overcome that addiction. That is one of the benefits of having a loving Heavenly Father who wants you to be healthy and clean. In addition to helping you to beat the addiction, God will forgive your sins of addiction and any other bad acts you may have done while you were addicted to stimulants.

Talk to Someone Else Who’s Been Through It

If you don’t believe that you can quit stimulants with God’s help, then talk to someone who was able to turn their back on drugs due to their faith.

Ask Someone Who Went Through AA

Many Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are based on the fact that there is a higher power. Since the God of Heaven is the only true God, you can know that even they know that He can save people from addiction.

If you doubt that God can help you to quit your addiction to stimulants, then speak to someone who has beat their addiction. They will likely say that they could not do it on their own. Ask if God was part of the equation, and then ask them for advice that can help in your situation.

Take My Word for It

Though I was never addicted to stimulants, I was addicted to drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes for many years.

When I wanted to quit smoking, I did it cold turkey. I said I wanted to quit, and I did. At that point, I was not going to church regularly or reading a bible. However, I know that only God could allow me to quit. Cigarettes are very addictive. Many people try to quit smoking many times and don’t succeed. It’s only by the grace of God that I was able to quit so easily and I still no longer smoke to this day.

Since college, I also felt that I had to drink alcohol to have a good time and enjoy my life. I got into a lot of trouble and many dangerous situations when I drank. I also got into some legal trouble. However, God kept me safe. There was one time where I drank too much and ventured down a street in a city I’ve never been to before. I should have gotten lost or hurt. Instead, my friends found me and brought me home safely.

That just goes to show that God protects all of us, even those that claim to hate him or believe that he doesn’t exist. In addition to keeping us safe when we have an addiction, he will help us to fight that addiction.

Conclusion

In conclusion, turn to God when you’re addicted and feeling down. He will listen to your prayers and help you to escape your addiction. Then, put your faith in Jesus, become born again, and you can become a new person and have a Heavenly Father who will always help you to live your best life.
